2010 is The Friends of the Parks and Trails 25th Anniversary
May 23, 2010 - Sunday 1pm to 4pm - Harriet Island Regional Park
Plan to come to our family celebration at Harriet Island in St. Paul.
Everyone that enjoys parks and trails are invited to the
The Friends of the Parks and Trails of St. Paul
and Ramsey County 25th Anniversary celebration of support, education and
advocating for parks, trails and open spaces in Ramsey County.
The Friends have been protecting, preserving and planting for 25 years and
the years seem to have flown by since the Friends were first
founded in a meeting of citizens in 1985. Some of the
highlights include:
-
No net loss of parkland in both Saint Paul and Ramsey County
which stopped the practice of allowing development on park land.
-
Establishment of park commissions for Saint Paul and Ramsey County
for a formal process to gather citizen input on park policy.
-
Our annual Friends Tree Sale and
Tribute Tree donations of over 6,000
trees to local community parks around the Twin Cities metro area.
-
Removal of buckthorn and management plans of the Mississippi River
Bluff to manage the natural environment.
-
Installation of a safe bikeway trail on the I-35E bridge over
the Mississippi River.
-
Restoration of Pickerel Lake by the Metropolitan Airports
Commission as mitigation for filling river floodplain
at the Saint Paul Downtown Airport.
-
The study in St. Paul of the park land dedication
policy from development and redevelopment of city land patterned on
suburban city ordinances.
This resulted in one of the first fully developed larger cities in the
USA to use this policy to develop parks to respond to the changing
urban landscape and it is being studied by other mature cities.
-
Support of the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant site for Rice Creek Park
and the study of other park and trail opportunities on this soon to
be surplused Federal land.
Join us on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Harriet Island
Regional Park, 1 pm to 4 pm. Please enjoy the displays, free treats,
park volunteer recognition and entertainment for children
and adults.
